UK to US Shoe Size: How to Read Brand Charts
A practical method for reading dress-shoe conversion charts without losing the original size label or assuming a guaranteed fit.

To convert a UK shoe size to a US reference, use the chart supplied by the manufacturer for the relevant footwear category. Start with the original label, select the correct chart section, and read across that row.
For dress shoes and boots, keep a second question separate: will the particular last and width fit your feet? A conversion identifies a corresponding chart label. It does not establish your fit in a different shoe.
Find out what the original label means
Before opening a conversion chart, confirm whether the size is UK, US, or another system. This matters when buying from an international storefront or reading a resale listing that may show a converted number.
Carmina, for example, states that its shoes are manufactured in UK sizes on its US English size guide. A storefront's location alone is therefore an insufficient reason to interpret a number as US sizing. See Carmina's official guide.
When a seller provides both an original and converted size, retain both with clear labels. If only one number appears, ask which system it uses.
Choose the correct chart section
Crockett & Jones publishes separate men's and women's sections in its fitting guide. Carmina's official chart also separates those categories. Use the relevant section rather than carrying a conversion from one category into another. See the Crockett & Jones fitting guide and Carmina's chart.
Read the row supplied by that brand. Avoid extending a pattern beyond the published entries or treating a chart as a list of sizes currently offered in every model.
Keep width and last information attached
After conversion, you still need the target shoe's width and last. Width letters need brand context: Carmina's chart, for instance, labels its standard category EE and places US D in the same row. That mapping belongs to Carmina's reference. See the official width chart.
A fitting question should therefore contain more than two converted numbers. Include the original labels for both shoes and describe the reference pair's actual fit. Our Carmina sizing guide walks through the brand's labeling in more detail.
Use this sequence before ordering
- Confirm the original size system and footwear category.
- Open the manufacturer's chart for the target shoe.
- Read the relevant published row and preserve its labels.
- Confirm the model's last and offered width.
- Share a known reference pair and any unresolved fit questions with the seller.
Save your original shoe labels and fit notes in My Shoes. If you need a clearer description of the shape reference, read what a shoe last is.
A careful conversion gives you a common reference for a conversation. The fitting decision still depends on the actual pair you are considering.
Put your fit knowledge to work
