Alden 405 Sizing: Trubalance and Catalog Widths
What the official Alden catalog confirms about model 405, how its width ranges differ, and which sizing questions still need a retailer’s answer.

Alden 405 sizing research should begin with the model's documented last and the width you are considering. The official catalog identifies the original brown workboot leather 405 with Trubalance. That is a useful model-to-last reference, but it is not a personal size recommendation.
Our October 17 research checked the product column on PDF page 17, printed page 31, of the official Alden catalog. Use the exact model and leather description when comparing that entry with a seller's listing.
Read the range for your width
The reviewed 405 catalog entry lists these ranges:
- B: 8 1/2–13.
- C: 7–13.
- D: 6–13.
- E: 6–13.
- EE: 6–12, 13.
- EEE: 7–12.
These reproduce the width-specific ranges in that catalog entry. They do not enumerate every individual size, establish the increments between endpoints, or show current inventory. Preserve the separate “6–12, 13” wording for EE rather than silently rewriting the range. See the source catalog, printed page 31.
If a size appears in one width's range, that does not mean it appears in every other width. Check the particular combination with the retailer.
Keep the size system explicit
The inspected product column does not itself identify a size system. Before converting a resale listing or comparing an international retailer's number, ask how that seller labels the pair.
Retain the original number and width from the shoe or box, then record any seller-provided conversion separately. This prevents a converted listing number from being mistaken for the original label later. Our UK-to-US chart guide explains that workflow.
Use Trubalance as a reference, not an automatic adjustment
Knowing that the 405 uses Trubalance makes a fitting conversation more specific. It does not establish a universal adjustment from your sneakers, another Alden last, or another manufacturer's boots.
Describe a pair you already wear: brand, model, last if confirmed, size system, size, width, and fit. Note whether the heel feels secure and whether the toes, forefoot, or instep feel restricted. Share these observations with a retailer who can address the exact 405 listing.
A short checklist before purchase
Confirm the model code and variant, the size system used by the seller, and the offered size-and-width combination. Ask about current stock and the conditions for a fitting return.
Save your reference pair in My Shoes, then add your actual 405 experience if you buy it. Keep the catalog fact, the retailer's advice, and your own wear notes separately labeled. Each answers a different question, and together they give you a clearer starting point for your next pair.
Put your fit knowledge to work
Use shoes that already fit as a starting point for your next pair.
